march
Dear philoptochos Members,
We enter the time of the great lent with a sobering sense of balance, curbing the excesses that are part of our privileged lives as citizens of the wealthiest country in the world. Our reality is that we only need to crave something in order to find easy access to it. We can purchase anything imaginable online and have it on our doorstep in hours or days. Every cuisine in the world can be found in our city, and the options we have for watching films, tv series, instructional videos or playing games, are too numerous to count. We live in an embarrassment of riches, even when our incomes are modest, because our society is full and prosperous enough to afford us all things possible. We are fortunate in this way, and also, somewhat corrupted.
Holy Lent allows us to pull back and return to our sense of basic need, free of the constant stimulus. Lent is time of introspection and peace, a safe time apart from the chaos of the world. It gives us time to recalibrate our priorities, to hear God’s voice in response to our questions, and it gives us the luxury of release from the frenetic pace of everyday life. I hope we will hold this gift dear and dwell in the silent, sparse space that is given us. I hope we can return to the womb of faith with intention, our sacrifices intended, and our wisdom multiplied, making our world a kinder, better place.
